Cleocin (generic name: Clindamycin) is used for treating serious infections caused by certain bacteria. It is not used to treat meningitis. Cleocin is a lincomycin antibiotic. Cleocin kills sensitive bacteria by stopping the production of essential proteins needed by the bacteria to survive.

Clindamycin is used to treat a wide variety of serious bacterial infections. It is an antibiotic which works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic only treats bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.
