Hyzaar Losartan (Hydrochlorthiazide)

Description
Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that helps to prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which causes fluid retention. Hyzaar Losartan is in a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. Hyzaar Losartan prevents blood vessels narrowing, lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow.
The combination of hydrochlorothiazide and hyzaar losartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension.Hydrochlorothiazide and hyzaar losartan may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. Recommendations
Before taking any medicine we recommend to see a specialist. Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not exceed prescribed dose, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the guidelines on your prescription label closely. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from this medication, it is your doctor who determines the dosage, so his opinion is the most important. Take this medication with a full glass (8 ounces) of water. To be sure this medication is helping you, your blood pressure will need to be checked regularly. Your kidney function may need to be tested as well. Do not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.
Precautions
Do not use this medication if you are allergic to hydrochlorothiazide (Carozide, Diaqua, Ezide HCTZ, HydroDiuril, Microzide) or losartan (Cozaar), or if you are unable to urinate or are allergic to sulfa drugs.
Before taking hydrochlorothiazide and losartan, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have any of diseases listed above:
- kidney disease;
- liver disease;
- congestive heart failure;
- asthma or allergies;
- low or high levels of potassium in your blood;
- gout;
- lupus;
- diabetes.
If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use hydrochlorothiazide and losartan, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment, this is your doctor who decides if you can take current medicine.
Current medication is in FDA pregnancy category D. This medication can cause harm to an unborn baby. Hydrochlorothiazide and losartan may cause injury and even death to the unborn baby if you take it during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Do not use hydrochlorothiazide and losartan without your doctor's consent if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant during treatment see your doctor immediately! It is not known whether hydrochlorothiazide and losartan passes into breast milk. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding.
