Description

Luvox (generic name: Fluvoxamine) is a drug that is used for treating several psychiatric disorders. It is in the class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a class that also includes fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), and paroxetine (Paxil). Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors affect neurotransmitters (chemicals) that nerves in the brain use to communicate with each other. Many experts believe that an imbalance in these neurotransmitters is the cause of depression and other psychiatric disorders.

Luvox works by inhibiting the uptake of serotonin (a neurotransmitter) by nerve cells. Therefore, there is more serotonin available to stimulate other nerves in the brain. Luvox is used for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, like other SSRIs, it also has been used in the treatment of major depression, management of obesity, bulimia, schizophrenia, and panic disorder.

Recommendations

Take Luvox by mouth with or without food.

Taking Luvox at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.

Continue to take Luvox even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.

Do not suddenly stop taking Luvox without checking with your doctor. Side effects may occur. They may include mental or mood changes, numbness or tingling of the skin, dizziness, confusion, headache, trouble sleeping, or unusual tiredness. You will be closely monitored when you start Luvox and whenever a change in dose is made.

If you miss a dose of Luvox, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Precautions

Luvox may cause harm to the fetus if it is used during the last 3 months of pregnancy. If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Luvox while you are pregnant. Luvox is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Luvox.

Do not drink alcohol while you are using Luvox.
